The Ultra ULT31502 is a 1000 volt-amp, 600 watt uninteruptible power supply designed for use with small servers and high-end PC's. This power supply backup measures 13" x 8" x 5" - a little narrower than a box-shaped small form factor computer. Power comes to the box via a standard three prong PC power supply cable, and leaves through four three prong 110 volt plugs, as well as a bypass outlet. Network devices are protected by a combination RJ45 network cable/RJ12 modem connectors. All of these plugs, as well as a circuit breaker, are located on the back of the unit.
Power is supplied by a sealed lead-acid battery that can provide power for about fifty minutes. Recharging the battery from flat to ninety-percent capacity takes six hours. Advanced Battery Management Technology helps prevent overcharging, extending the life of the battery; typically the battery should last between three and six years. The Ultra also has UPS Green Mode: the power supply will shut down when there is no load and the battery is fully charged. Warnings are displayed with lights on the front of the case, and with an audio alarm, including backup battery use, low charge, abnormal charge, and overload.
The Ultra line includes UPSMON, a suite of power management tools. Information is sent to the computer via a USB port on the back of the unit, and can be set up to safely shut down the computer if the UPS battery is running low. This same functionality can be used to schedule start up and shut down times for any device plugged into the power supply. Users can also receive notifications of power events via e-mail or pager, and keep track of events with a log, or in real-time with the included system monitor. The software shipped with the unit is compatible with Windows, Linux, and Novel Netware.
The Ultra comes with a $125,000 warranty on any devices damaged while connected to the device. This warranty includes professional data recovery service for hard drives that lose data because of power interruption, but damaged equipment must be shipped to Ultra for evaluation before the warranty is honored. The power supply also comes with a one-year warranty covering material and manufacturing defects; this can be increased to three years by registering the product on-line for free. The Ultra currently retails for around $120.
